Stewards of Children^®

Duration: 120 minutes including discussion and Q&A

Audience: Schools, youth-serving organizations, and the community-at-large

Synopsis: Stewards of Children® is an evidence-informed sexual abuse prevention training. This two-hour, facilitator-led training teaches adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse and is based on Darkness to Light’s 5 Steps to Protecting Our Children^™ and is brought locally into communities by a network of over 9,000 volunteer facilitators.

Recognizing and Reporting Abuse and Neglect

Duration: 60-90 minutes including discussion and Q&A

Audience: Schools, youth-serving organizations, and the community-at-large

Synopsis: This state-specific training focuses on early intervention and prevention of abuse in all forms; emotional maltreatment, physical, and sexual.

Outcomes:

• Describe the reporting law and reporting procedure in specific jurisdictions.
• Respond appropriately when children disclose allegations of abuse or neglect.
• Identify what information you can expect upon making a report to the DFS Child Abuse and Neglect Report Line.
• Acquire a basic understanding of the civil and criminal definitions in statute for the various types of child maltreatment.
• Recognize the relationship between physical and behavioral indicators and suspicion of child abuse and neglect.
• Employ primary prevention strategies that leave children less susceptible to abuse. 

Grooming and Vulnerable Children

Duration: 60 minutes including discussion and Q&A

Audience: Adults in schools, youth-serving organizations, and the community-at-large.

Synopsis: Introduces the definition of grooming: (v) a methodical strategy commonly used by offenders to gain trust and alone time with children.

Outcomes:

• Learn to identify how entire communities, organizations, families, and children can be groomed through case studies.
• Build policies that prohibit conduct which could lead to grooming and create a heightened awareness and mitigation strategies that better protect children.
• How offenders use secrecy to shield them from suspicion and forbid children from reporting.
• Prevention strategies that minimize opportunities for abuse.

Internet Safety and Cyberbullying Prevention

Duration: 45-60 minutes including discussion and Q&A

Audience: Grades 3-12 (Parent/Teacher module is available upon request)

Synopsis: This facilitator-led training covers progressively mature, age-appropriate subject matters such as good digital citizenship, privacy, cyberbullying, as well as sexting, online predators, and sexual solicitation. This is an interactive presentation with video segments and scenario-based discussions around typical situations that children and teens are bound to encounter online—often when they are alone.

  • The prevalence, repercussions, and circumstances of bullying and child sexual abuse through the use of the Internet.

Sexting, Sextortion, and Sexploitation

Duration: 60 minutes (including discussion and Q&A)

Audience: Middle and High School-aged Students

Synopsis: Facilitator-led training exploring the definition of sexting, the laws around it, and potentially harmful aftermath.

Outcomes:

• Learn to avoid the long-lasting and serious consequences of sharing intimate images.
• Understand how the Internet uses pieces of personal information and images as commodities for the online market, which has tremendous demand.
• Know the realities of sextortion and sexploitation – how even one release of a sexual image can entrap the exposed victim into furnishing more or to comply with other unwanted demands.
• Understand how internet searches are the new norm for prospective employers, scholarship providers, and other application-based opportunities.
